About the Author

Joan - Put On A Happy Face rated #2 BEST SELLER in both Biographical Fiction and Historical Biographical Fiction - a real page turner!

Chantal T wrote: "5-stars! Finished your book this morning and I LOVED it! As all my family on my Mum's side are Italian I loved it even more!! When your characters went to the seaside resort in Italy I had in my mind that it was in my hometown Viareggio, which is on that side of Italy and is the most wonderful place in the world - every year they have a Carnival (which is the biggest one in Europe) and is full of amazing floats and I think Joan and co would love performing in it."

During the day Carol can be found at her desk facilitating bookings for the entertainers on her books; a range of top class acts via her Entertainment Agency A.R.C. Entertainments which she founded in the summer of '98.

She brings a wealth of experience to the writing of her book including her experience as a Hypnotherapist; having trained to Fellowship level with Dr Peter L Goodwin founder of the Institute of Hypnosis & Parapsychology in the '80s where she worked alongside her Mother and sister. Together they formed a group of paranormal investigators collectively calling themselves 'Psychic Research & Investigation into Sensitive Mediums' or P.R.I.S.M. for short, all in their spare time. They tested out different psychic tools used to aid clairvoyance: tarot cards, psi cards, numerology, hand-analysis, I-Ching, telepathy, mediumship, even the occasional ghost hunting went on, along with UFO-watching if a case was brought to their attention!

There's a lot more to Carol than meets the eye. With her pioneering spirit she has been a founding member for so many projects - among them is Stockton Music and Arts Collective, as well as the Stockton Fringe Festival in the early 90s and later, she organised the very first BBC Music Live event in Durham in 2000, where even the weather created its own challenges with rain, wind, hail, snow, thunder, lightning all attempting to cancel the event before its due time, but even the weather couldn't stop Carol for once the sunshine came out, her entertainers, her folkies, all came back out to play - stalwarts of the music business and often underestimated for their talents; we shouldn't under-estimate this woman either. As fellow author Erin Pizzey - a pioneer herself, author of 'Prone to Violence' and founder of the first women's refuge in Chiswick (now celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year) says:

"Wow your book is a tour de force the research that you must have done to cover such a huge amount of years is amazing I loved the book you are a natural born storyteller. I hope to read your next book soon, lots of love and congratulations."

JOAN – Put On A Happy Face' rated #2 BEST SELLER in both Biographical Fiction and Historical Biographical Fiction. It's a real page turner!

Joan's son missed his Father putting him to bed at night so Joan decided to make Father into a puppet; so she could tell her son stories about him, create adventures that they could all be part join in as a family, eventually adding their friends, her son loved them – it became a special time for Mother and son.

As time went on, she began to share her shows with the other children and her shows became so popular that other puppeteers began telling similar stories, all with the same basic characters, but all different in their own ways and at first Joan was pleased that her stories were entertaining so many children, for Joan loved children, but she herself had been blessed with only the one... her Nicholas - who she adored!

What people don't know is that Joan and her family are immortal; their lives have not been entirely easy, for over the centuries they have experienced it all... laughter, love, happiness, jealousy... even murder; no one has known their real story until now - Joan decided it was time to reveal the story behind her puppet show - ‘Punch & Judy'.

Praise for Carol M Mottershead from some of your other favourite authors:

‘Ello Carol, I managed to get the paperback version from Amazon and had time to read over the holidays. Well done! An excellent read. I loved your characters and really enjoyed following them on their journey. I'm looking forward to the next book. I really enjoyed the chapters that you recorded too. I think I will ask Amanda to record my book when it's finished. I'm editing the last few stories at the moment. Best wishes Mark Hadlett (Author)'

What Everyone Is Saying About Joan – Put On A Happy Face:

‘Hi Carol, Finished your book this morning and I LOVED it – as all my family on my mum's side are Italian I loved it even more! When they went to the seaside resort in Italy I had in my mind that it was in my hometown Viareggio which is on that side of Italy and is the most wonderful place in the world – every year they have a Carnival (which is the biggest one in Europe) and is full of amazing floats and I think Joan and co would love performing in it. I'll leave a review on Amazon and Goodreads later today – is there anywhere else? Thanks, Chantal Taylor'

‘Carol, thank you for the book. I finished it the next day. Easy to read and quite a page turner. It deserves to become popular. I enjoyed the tantalising summary and was especially interested how you rehabilitate Joan as a warm resilient and enterprising character. P Hardwicke'

‘I've really enjoyed this book. An interesting mix of plot points that cover everything from historical fiction and fantasy, to an in depth study of marital abuse and the strength of character to rise above it. I hope the author continues this story as I really like the ending too. David Littlefair'

‘I really enjoyed reading this book as I found it fascinating. Well worth a read. Highly recommended. Toni Marie'
